ORGANIC LED LAMP BY MAKOTO TOJIKI

When it comes to innovative lighting, there’s cool, and then there’s just plain brilliant (pun intended). Makoto Tojiki’s “Archimedes Dream” seems to fall into the latter category. The glowing ribbon chandelier is illuminated thanks to organic light emitting diodes, or OLED’s. In case you’re not familiar, OLEDs are a subcategory of LEDs that glow thanks to an electroluminescent layer of organic compounds (think glow-in-the-dark paint, but organic, and fancier). The high technology coupled with the simple, gestural form, made for quite the eye-catching booth at last weekend’s ICFF.

If you’re wondering about the name, Archimedes was an ancient Greek mathematician, physicist and engineer, “credited with producing machines that were well ahead of their time.” It looks like Mr. Tojiki is following in his footsteps with an innovative light that its namesake would no doubt be very proud of.

These are really cool, I saw them in the flickr photos and was hoping you’d follow up, thanks! Is there any significance to the numbers?

This seems more a decoration than a usable lamp. It doesn’t look bright enough for that, or is that just the way the photos turned out?

The future is now. MAKOTO TOJIKI is taking the first step in making efficient light sources that look great too. We must, as an industry and as a people, support these energy effecient cutting edge designs. Our future depends on it. http://www.bloglighting.com/

If I’m not mistaken, this material is called “EL TAPE” ( or EL Wire) That is - Electroluminescnt Wire.

It’s composed of copper wire that is surrounded by the new rare earth phosphors and covered in a plastic sheathing. When you put an electrical current through it, it glows.

Really neat looking and extremely low power consumption.

NICE, but i wonder if they have addressed the life-time issue that goes along with OLED. (Blue usualy is about 5000 hours)

Aaah once again the raver will have something fun to wear. Glowing neon jackets, pants… wow the possibility is endless
