Jill is the founder of Inhabitat, as well as a freelance designer and green design consultant based in New York City. She created Inhabitat in the Spring of 2005 as a way to catalog her endless search for new ways to improve the world through forward-thinking, high-tech, and environmentally conscious design. Educated at Brown University, where she received a B.A. in Art Semiotics, and Central St. Martins, where she received an M.A. in Design Studies, she currently resides in New York City, which so far has been good for her obsession with rooftop gardens and vegan junk food restaurants.

Currently we use the term “green design” as if it is some special category or unique type of design. We need to do this to explain ecological design, and to sell it, and to get people interested in sustainability as a design concept. Hello Jill,
My name is Lauren Smith, I am a senior Interior Design student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh working with Carnegie Mellon University on our Solar Decathlon house. This house will be in the Washington D.C. Solar Decathlon Competition on October 1st. We were wondering if your company would be willing to donate a cardboard Item, such as a chair or a table for our competition. This items could be defective, we don’t mind. we would also put your name on the produce, returning it when we were finished. We would also pay for shipping and handling. More that 150,000 people will be visiting the Solar home the week of October 12-20.

Dear Jill,

Before i found your wonderful site(& MOCOLOCO IN 2003) someone like myself was force to waist is money and buy garbage like architectural digest or any of those corporate lap dog architecture magazines if you wanted to see or had a interest in architecture .Being someone who loves modern or even futuristic architecture design i was often frustrated after opening these over price magazines pages to only see a few pictures and a superficial article devoted to anything outside the ordinary,let alone futuristic .All their pages are reserve for crass ADVERTISING and for the same old same old cookie cutter architecture ARTICLES about: the Same stupid new-york condo,long island mansion,cape-cod family home,southern mansion and Malibu beach house over and over AD INFINITUM!
So Jill i cannot thank you enough for your great work,i have learn so much since 2005 about all of sort of magnificent, innovative,modern,AFFORDABLE and environmentally friendly home options that otherwise would have been kept from us in the general public.
P.S.: are you single? you are also a TOTAL BABE!!

hey jill,
i signed in to recive updts from this site six mnths prior, ur site is extremly useful n awesome especially the variety of information displayed is vast n doesnt restricts itself to a particular sector, the platform u have formed is exclusive . n most of all when i saw it as a individual effort i was thrilled. u r really going great i do inform most of friends to go for the site. its is difficult in a developing country like india to think about sustainability n rest of the factors which can affect the future of the planet. i have planned to practise sustainable architure as soon as i pass out as well as spread awareness among rest of people who r not in architectural field.
hey n i assure u dat i will surely manage to meet u when i come for my masters .

Hi Jill,

I am presently working with some well healed investors in creating a “Green Store” (Home Depot style) here in Roseburg, Oregon. I welcome any product ideas, lists of green manufacturers you recommend, etc.
